Baseball Tops Itasca

Baseball Tops Itasca

Less than 24 hours after it was shut down by St. Cloud Technical, the Anoka-Ramsey baseball team was back to its old hit and run-scoring ways Wednesday afternoon (May 4) on Grand Rapids' Legion field during 7-3 and 17-8 non-division wins over Itasca Community College.

Anoka-Ramsey batters collected 26 hits against Itasca in a pair of seven-inning games led by the soft-spoken, quintessential sophomore center fielderMylo Hommes (Elk River), who chimed in loudly with three hits in both games and a grand total of seven RBI.

With his six-hit performance, Hommesbecame the program's all-time single-season record-owner with 51 hits. He also owns Anoka-Ramsey's single-season record of 16 doubles.

Others with big days at the plate included designated hitter Michael Zimbeck (Coon Rapids), who had three hits in the first game and both Haven Williams (Osseo) andZack Waalen (Somerset), who had three hits each during Anoka-Ramsey's 17-hit second game.

Williams did not bat during the first game in which he started and finished on the mound. A knuckle ball hurler, the small-in-height, but huge-in-desireWilliams subsequently picked up his first pitching victory of the season by giving up a half dozen hits and striking out a pair.

Another solid pitching performance was turned in by Austin "Tex" Greiner (Rogers) during the second game. After reporting to the mound in the third inning, the little lefty pitched five strong innings, giving up six hits, while striking out three to also record his first pitching win of the season.

The wins were Anoka-Ramsey's 23rd in 35 games this season.
