Volleyball Wins NJCAA Tourney First Round Match in 5

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Dallas College Brookhaven's volleyball team pulled out a five-set win over Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute in the opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Tournament Thursday.

The 10th-seeded Bears moved within a match of the .500 mark, following the 25-18, 23-25, 25-12, 24-26, 15-10 win. Brookhaven (14-15) advances to Thursday's 5:30 p.m. quarterfinals against No. 2-seeded Owens Community College (18-10).

Brookhaven hit .180 in the tournament opening round win, and outblocked Caldwell, 10-6.

The Bears, who produced a .273 attack percentage in the opening set – the first of three straight in which they put down 13 kills – were outdug, 92-89. Brookhaven attempted 200 swings on the offensive end, while the Cobras had 180 attacks.

Caroline Simpson had 17 kills and 23 digs, Laila Beck had 16 kills and four blocks, and Madison Beasley 14 kills, 16 digs and four blocks. Jordan Bruscato had 50 assists, 16 digs, five aces and a block. Emma Borders had six aces, and Trynity Hicks 17 digs.

Caldwell's Greenleigh Gleason pounded 25 kills, and hit .286. Laney Craig had 20 kills, Josie Chappell 27 assists and 24 digs, and Emma Grace Hiatt 18 assists, 12 digs and five blocks.

The Cobras hit .000 in the third and fifth sets.
