The Lake Region State College men's & women's basketball teams were at home this weekend for a pair of double headers.
First the women and their games versus United Tribes Technical College and Williston State College. In the game vs. UTTC LRSC jumped out to an early lead, leaning on their defense to give them a 19pt half time lead. They would need it, as UTTC came out swinging in the second half. Tiziana Huici had 22pts, Matisyn Moses had 13pts and Pilar Ortiz brough 8pts and 11rebs off the bench. The win over UTTC was a historic one as it was the 1000th win in the history of the LRSC program.
Acting Athletic Director Jared Marshall said, "This is a historic milestone for a proud program. We want to thank all the past players, coaches & supporters for helping make this possible. I would like to give a special mention to Coach Duane Schwab, he is the backbone of this program and built it into what it is today. His 572 wins, time and dedication to the women's basketball program and LRSC will never be forgotten."
With 1000 wins fresh in their minds, the Lady Royals were eager to go get 1001. It was another quick start this time for LRSC and there was no looking back on this one. After gaining a comfortable 10pt lead at the half it never got any closer on the way to a 73-55 win. Josie Brodina got hot against the Teton zone making 5-10 3's for 17pts. Marta lopez filled up the stat colum with 8pts, 3rebs, 4asts 7 4stls, while Iara Navarro had her best game of the season with 12pts.
Interim Head Coach Colden Hutton said, "I was happy with how today went. I think we really showed what kind of team that we can be. The challenge is to continue to grow and to become more consistent as a team."
The Lady Royals are now 4-4 (3-3) overall with games coming up this weekend against Casper College and Western Wyoming in Casper, WY.
On the men's side they continued to show their stingyness on the defensive end. United Tribes came into the game averaging 96ppg and the Royals held them to 71 while scoring 91 of their own. Ben Hoverson led the way with 16pts, Clarence Daniels put up a double double with 14pts and 12rebs, James Sommer 11pts & D'Sean Larkins 10pts would round out the double figure scoring. Every player got in on the action scoring for LRSC.
Head Coach Jared Marshall said this about the weekend, "We continue to rely on our defense to set the tone for us everyday. I thought Saturday was a fantastic defensive effort for almost the whole game. We started a little slowly against UTTC and very slowly against DCB. However, we rebounded in the 2nd half in a big way on both days to secure wins. We also continue to do a great job getting to the free throw line and establish ourselves in the paint."
The Royals are now 7-2 (5-2) overall with games coming up this weekend against Casper College and Western Wyoming in Casper, WY.
