Walk-off Win Helps Highland Softball Sweep Neosho County in KJCCC Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The #7 Highland softball team has battled all season some true grit and fight was on display on Monday for the Scotties at home as they wrapped up Conference play with a pair of wins over Neosho County that included a walk-off win in which the Scotties can back from four runs down. 

Scotties snagged game one victory by controlling the game winning 8-0 in six innings, but in game two fell behind multiple times only to overcome a four run deficit to win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh 11-10 to earn the win of Neosho County. 

Highland got on the board in the bottom of the first without a hit to open the scoring in game one was Chevell Sartin was hit by a pitch, stole second and then on the steal came into score. Scotties added to their lead by sending eight to the plate in the third and worked the bases loaded to open the inning on an error and two walks and scored four in the frame lead by a Hannah Schmidt two RBI double. An RBI single by Alexis Hodapp scored Cassidy Greer in the fourth after Greer led the inning off with a walk, while Kami Zimmerman hit her first home run of the season in the fifth inning. Up 7-0 the Scotties looked to finish the game in the bottom of the sixth and did so as Kelly Uthe pinch hit and came through with an RBI single to bring in Isabella Konieczka to give the Scotties the 8-0 six inning win. 

Zimmerman led the Scottie offense going 3-3 with two RBI's, while Schmidt was 1-2 with a double, two RBI's and walk. Konieczka was 2-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and reached on an error and Hodapp went 1-2 with two walks, a run scored and RBI. 

Bailey Lacy earned the win in the circle pitching a six inning complete game shutout for her 13th win of the season giving up just six hits in the contest and struckout four. 

Game two was totally different than game one but ultimately it was the same outcome as the Scotties earned the win. Neosho County started the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning but Highland tallied one of their own in the first, also. Both teams plated another run in the second and it was 2-2 after two innings. Highland snagged the lead in the fourth as Schmidt led the inning off with a hit and would come around to score making it 3-2. 

In the fifth inning Neosho County took control by batting around and scoring five runs on five hits, a walk and error to lead 7-3. Highland not rattled answered in the bottom of the fifth with a three run home run by Hannah Schmidt, but Neosho tagged the Scotties for three runs on two home runs in the top of the sixth. Bottom of the sixth a sac fly by Uthe got Highland a run and after setting down Neosho County in the seventh the Scotties were down to their final three outs trailing 10-7. 

In the bottom of the seventh Highland got a leadoff hit by Schmidt followed by a strikeout, single and fielder's choice moved the Scotties to their final out of the game. Sartin walked to load the bases and then Hodapp laced a two RBI single into play to make it a one run game. Uthe came to the plate and delivered a two RBI double to walk-off the contest as Hodapp scored the winning run with Scotties winning 11-10. 

Zimmerman & Schmidt once again led the Scottie offense as Kami was 3-4 with a double and reached on an error and Hannah went 3-4 with a three-run home run and scored three runs. Hodapp went 2-4 with three RBI's and was hit by a pitch, while Sartin was 1-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored. Lacy earned the win in relief of Uthe pitching for the Scotties. 

The wins move the Scotties to 28-10 on the season and finishes their year in Conference play with a 15-5 record. Highland will be back in action on Wednesday, April 24th in non-conference play against Southeast Community College in a doubleheader starting at 2:00pm.
