Johnson County advances to national championship with 66-60 upset over Kirkwood

JOPLIN, Mo. –  The Johnson County women's basketball team will play for a NJCAA Division II women's basketball national championship.

The No. 4- seed Cavaliers upset No. 1 seed and previously unbeaten Kirkwood 66-60 to advance to the championship game for the sixth time in program history.  Johnson County snapped Kirkwood's 54-game win streak. The victory was the 600th in head coach Ben Conrad's coaching career.

Down seven at halftime, JCCC outscored the Eagles 40-27 in the second half. A 12-4 run over the first 5:02 of the fourth quarter gave JCCC a lead they would not relinquish.

Sophomore forward Aa'Mya Stacker led Johnson County with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. She also had a team-high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.

Freshman guard Tamia Smith followed with 13 points and eight rebounds and freshman guard Layla Scott tallied 11 points.

Other key performances were turned in by freshman guard Kara Stricklin (8 points), freshman guard Heaven Smith (6 points, 4 assists), sophomore guard Taliyah Scott (5 points, 3 assists, 3 steals) and sophomore forward Yar Manyiel (4 points, 6 rebounds)

Jariah Harris led Kirkwood with 12 points, followed by Olivia Wren with 11 points.

Johnson County will attempt to capture its third national title Saturday night at 7 p.m., against No. 6 seed Pima. The Aztecs reached the championship by upsetting No. 2 seed Baltimore CCBC Essex 115-112 in overtime.
