Ryan gets 400th in Bishop State blowout
Mississippi Gulf Coast handed head coach Tim Ryan his 400th victory in style Monday by drilling Bishop State 102-68 to open the men's basketball season Monday in Mobile.
"I thought we played well, a good team game," Ryan said. "The press really hurt these guys because they were missing one of their better guards. They had trouble handling the ball."
Melvion Flanagan (So., Peabody/Alexandria, La.) picked up right where he left off last season, leading six Bulldogs double-digit scorers with 22 points.
Carr Thiam (So., Wharton/Tampa, Fla.) had 18 points, and Calvin Johnson (So., Long Beach/Long Beach) pitched in 15 points. Donovan Sanders (Fr., Lake Cormorant/Walls) scored 14 points, Dontavius Proby (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) 13 and Anthony Ratliff (So., Terry/Jackson) 10.
"It was really balanced," Ryan said. "When you score a lot of points, you're gonna have a lot of guys in double-figures. Lee Flenor had eight, and he sat a long time int eh first half."
It's the first time the Bulldogs have broken the 100-point mark in Ryan's tenure at Perk in his 18th game in charge.
Gulf Coast plays its first home game Friday when Royal Ambassadors visit the Weathers-Wentzell Center. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
