Owls Record New Season-High In Scoring With 116-54 Win Over Butler County

The Prince George's Community College men's basketball team picked up their second straight win following another 100-point performance against visiting Butler County Community College on Sunday, January 30th. The Owls quickly jumped out to a 17-0 lead over the first six and a half minutes versus the Pioneers and never looked back on their way to a 116-54 victory.

Sunday's new season-high in scoring for the Owls shouldn't come as too much of a surprise as Prince George's has now put up triple digits in six games on the year as they've battled to a 10-7 overall record. The win locked up the #1 seed for the Owls in the upcoming Region 20 Division III Tournament as they improved to 5-0 on the season against region division opponents.

The Owls 17-0 opening run matched the score produced by Butler the entire first half as Prince George's stepped up their defense, allowing the Pioneers to connect on just 26% of their shots from the floor, including 1-of-14 from beyond the arc. Freshman Deonte Cooke was tied as the game's leading scorer at halftime with 8 points, adding 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Butler was able to step up their offense in the second half but it was no match for the Owls attack which poured in 64 points in the second half alone, outpacing the Pioneers scoring the entire game.

The Owls had their second-best shooting performance in the win as they hit on 50% (49-98) of their shots from the floor. Prince George's only contest during which they shot a higher percentage from the floor came nearly three months prior on Thursday, November 6th at Thaddeus Stevens when the Owls shot 53.5% (23-43) from the floor in the 87-81 win. The Owls created 43 attempts from the free throw line during that game, something that wasn't needed on Sunday against Butler County as Prince George's effectively spread the ball around, creating open looks for the shooter.

Six different Owls finished in double-digit scoring with freshman Saveon Jackson paving the way with 19 points. Cooke recorded his third straight and fifth overall double-double in the win as he finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds while adding 7 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks on the day. Freshman Andreas Muten recorded his first double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 boards. Dajuan McMillan (11), Antonio Marr (11), and Caleb Wilson (10) rounded out the six Owls who finished in double-digit scoring.

Prince George's now has an opportunity to fine-tune their approach against a slate of Maryland JUCO opponents over the next two weeks before they head to Anne Arundel Community College for the NJCAA Region 20 Division III Tournament taking place February 18th-20th. The first challenger is Division II Howard Community College on Wednesday, February 2nd when the Owls travel to Columbia, MD to face the Dragons. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 PM.
