Jayhawks Earn All-American Honors In Three Events

FORT PIERCE, FL – It was yet another success day for the Jamestown Community College women's swimming team, earning All-American status in three events at day two of the National Junior College Athletic Association Swimming & Diving National Championship.

 

Sophomore Karianne Yuchnitz (Panama, NY/Panama Central) set a new school record in the 100 yard butterfly with the time of 1:03.33 in the preliminary rounds. Yuchnitz broke the record held by teammate freshman Tia Moppert (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda Central) who set it with the time of 1:08.35 at the end of March. Moppert also competed in the preliminary round, posting a time of 1:06.42.

 

In the championship round, Yuchnitz improved her time and once again set a new school record, swimming a time of 1:02.44 and placing eighth, earning All-American status. Moppert also improved on her time to finish ninth place with a time of 1:05.57.

 

Freshman Jade Vidas (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Parktown HS for Girls) also competed in the 100 yard butterfly, posting a time of 1:08.61 in the prelims. In the championship round, Vidas finished with a new personal best 1:08.01 and placing 12th.

 

Freshman Anna Burt (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) posted a time of 32.49 in the 50 yard backstroke. In the championship round, Burt posted a personal best of 31.78 and finishing 12th. Freshman Alyssa Hanesworth (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS) also competed in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 40.00 in the prelims. In the championship round, Hanesworth placed 15th with a new personal best, 37.83.

 

The Jayhawks also performed in the relay races, earning All-American honors in the 200 yard freestyle relay and in the 400 yard medley relay. The team of Vidas, Moppert, Burt, and Yuchnitz posted a new school record, finishing with a time of 1:45.05 to finish fourth.

 

In the 400 yard medley relay, the team of Lillian Baer (Jamestown, NY/Maple Grove HS), Burt, Moppert, and Yuchnitz also set a new record with a time of 4:36.68 to finish fourth.

As a team, JCC currently sits in fourth with 158 team points.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action tomorrow for day three of the national tournament. Competition begins at 9:30 a.m.
