Lady Warriors Win Big Over Visiting Bishop State 100-48

The East Central Community College Lady Warriors and Warriors kept their unbeaten basketball seasons in intact with a sweep over the visiting Bishop State Community College teams out of Mobile, Ala., Monday, Nov. 12, in Brackeen-Wood Gym on the campus in Decatur.

The ECCC Lady Warriors picked up a big 100-48 win in the opener, while the Warriors took care of the Bishop State Wildcats 78-70 in the nightcap.

East Central also swept the Bishop State teams to open the season Nov. 1 in Mobile.

Both East Central teams are now a perfect 3-0 on the season. The Bishop State Lady Wildcats fell to 1-3, while the Wildcats are 0-4.

The Lady Warriors wasted little time putting away Bishop State, outscoring the Lady Wildcats 28-6 in the second period to take a commanding 54-28 lead into the locker room.

Five Lady Warriors scored in double figures in the 52-point win, led by 23 from sophomore guard Breanna Riley out of Biloxi High School on 10 of 14 shooting from the field. Sophomore forward Sharan Turner (Gonzales, La., East Ascension), freshman guard Destini Cathey (Senatobia), freshman guard Jariyah Covington (Starkville), and sophomore forward Whitney Waters (Heidelberg) had 11 points each. Eleven Lady Warriors got into the scoring column.

East Central forced 30 turnovers in the game and had 11 steals.

The Warriors got a career-high 32 points from sophomore guard Roti Ware of Morton in the eight-point win over the Bishop State Wildcats. Ware hit five of his six three-point attempts and all seven free throws on the career night. He also picked up five steals. Freshman guard Nick Preyer (Mobile, Ala., Leflore) continued his hot start to the season with 17 points, nine assists, and two steals. Preyer has scored in double digits in his first three collegiate games.

East Central again shot well from the free throw line hitting 16 of 19 on the night.

The East Central teams will host the EC Classic Nov. 19-20 in Brackeen-Wood Gym. The ECCC basketball teams will use the tournament to support a Toys for Tots drive for the Christmas holidays. Anyone who brings a new toy to any game of the two-day classic will be admitted half price.

The Lady Warriors will face Southern University-Shreveport at 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, and then Coahoma at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The Warriors will play Mississippi Delta at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, and Coahoma at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles and the Pearl River Wildcats will also participate in the tournament.
