DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from IWCC

Sophomore Abby Flanagan of Coggon threw a two-hitter in the opener and freshman Kendall Clark of Humboldt hit a pair of home runs in the nightcap as the DMACC softball team remained unbeaten for the season by sweeping a doubleheader from Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) March 2 at Council Bluffs.

 

DMACC, ranked third in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, took the opener, 2-0, and won the second game by a 9-3 score to stay unbeaten for the season at 11-0.

 

Flanagan ran her record to 4-0 with the win in the first game. She threw all seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven batters.

 

DMACC scored both of its runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., led the Bears offensively with a pair of singles and an RBI. Sophomore Sami Miller of Mason City and freshmen Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., and Zoey Hightshoe of Boone each doubled in the game and Hightshoe drove in the other DMACC run.

 

Clark hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs and Miller singled and homered and drove in two runs to lead DMACC to its win in the second game. The Bears led 4-3 after three innings and got the win behind a three-run rally in the fifth and two runs in the seventh.

Freshman Emma Dighton of Boone pitched the first two innings for DMACC, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out one batter. Sophomore Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt also went two innings and improved to 3-0 for the season with the win. She allowed one run on two hits, struck out two and walked one. Sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa went two innings and struck out two batters and freshman Sydney Kennedy of Peosta threw one inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.

 

The DMACC softball team is idle until March 9 when the Bears will open the home season against this same IWCC. team The doubleheader will start at 1:00 pm at the DMACC softball diamond.
