LCCC Volleyball 7th in NJCAA Poll, Wraps up Competitive Weekend

September 5, 2019 - - The Lorain County Community College Women's Volleyball team squared off against some competitive teams this past week, including the Nation's Top-Ranked Team, Owen's Community College. Although dropping their match against Owens, LCCC played tough against the perennial national contender, which helped move them into the seventh spot in the NJCAA Division III National Poll.

In their OCCAC season opener, the Commodores played evenly with the Express before dropping the first two sets by scores of 22-25 and 20-25. Owens took charge early in the third set taking an 11-4 lead on their way to a 25-12 victory. 2018 All-American, Kara Sullinger (N. Ridgeville) led LCCC with 19 assists and 13 digs, while teammate Brooklyn Hudson (New London/Fitchville) added 10 digs. Katie Layport (New London/Collins) fired off 4 service aces and Ashley Elliot (LaGrange/Keystone) led the team with a .214 attack percentage.

Over the Labor Day weekend, LCCC returned to Owens to compete in the Owens Classic and finished 2-2 against some strong competition.

Sullinger led the way for LCCC against Sandhills with 5 service aces, 9 kills, and 24 assists in the 3-2 victory. Maddie Markovich (Sheffield Village/Christian Community School) had 14 digs, 9 kills and 4 service aces. Lydia Solak (LaGrange/Christian Community School) had 6 blocks, including 3 solo blocks and added 8 kills in the win. Hudson and Myah McDonald (Avon) both had double digit digs with 11 and 10, respectively.

LCCC played stellar defense in their 3-1 win against Jamestown, with Hudson racking up 23 digs. Sullinger had 21 digs and handed out 33 assists, along with 3 service aces. Markovich led the offense with 13 kills and added 15 digs on the defensive end. Solak put down 10 kills and had 5 blocks.

Jackson topped Lorain in the 3rd match with a 3-1 win. McDonald had a team high 28 digs and 4 other players had double-digit digs in the match, as the Commodores combined for 107 digs. Sullinger had 19 digs and 37 assists. Markovich had 17 digs, along with 12 kills. Alyssa Burch (Wakeman/Western Reserve) had 16 digs, while Hudson added 14. Solak contributed 10 kills, along with 4 blocks.

Lorain fought hard against unbeaten Kalamazoo College, but fell 3-2 in their final match. Sullinger had 42 assists and 16 digs in the contest, along with 3 service aces. Elliot led LCCC with 13 kills and Markovich added 10 kills along with 12 digs. Hudson again added double-digit digs with 15.
