Men's Golf Competes at the Oakwood Intercollegiate
Enid, OK – The Reiver Men's Golf team competed at the Oakwood Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday this week, finishing 8th out of 16 teams. 11 of the 16 teams competing were nationally ranked within their respective divisions.
Monday's round consisted of 36 holes, comprising rounds 1 and 2. Freshman Lloyd Hughes led the Reivers in the opening round with a 3-over par 74. Sophomore Bowdie Fox making his second consecutive varsity appearance finished just 1 shot back of Hughes with a 4-over par 75. Iowa Western's final two scores came from Sophomore Ryan Lingelbach's 5-over par 76, and Sophomore Nick Slobbe's 7-over par 78. The team tallied an opening round team score of 303.
During the second 18 on Monday, the Reivers were led by Slobbe's 4-over par 75. Following him would be Hughes at 5-over par 76, and Freshman Ethan Main, as well as Fox rounding out the scoring with their 7-over par 78's. Iowa Western finished with a second-round team score of 307, to sit in 8th place overall.
Tuesday's final round saw Main lead the team with a steady 1 over par 72. Slobbe came in with a 4-over par 75, Hughes tallied a 5-over par 76, and completing the scoring for the Reivers would be Lingelbach who totaled 6-over par 78. It would add up to a final round of 300. The Reivers would finish the event in 8th place.
"Execution was a struggle for us throughout the tournament, we struggled to hit good golf shots" said Coach Ryan Norman. "These greens are elevated, with a lot of slope, and very quick. So, you must execute your shots to be in position to hit your approaches to the correct spots. If you do that, you'll be able to score. If you don't you have to grind to make pars, and in the end we just made to many bogeys."
Hughes would be the Reivers highest finisher individually in the event, as he placed 32nd overall out of 92 players. Iowa Western will be back in action April 7th and 8th at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas. The event is the Bethany College Classic, hosted by Bethany College.
