Volleyball National Championships: Runners Finish 8th Nationally

Roadrunner Volleyball finished the Fall 2021 season in 8th place nationally in the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament at the Rochester Regional Sports Center in Rochester, MN.

In their final match, Coach Rebecca Pierson's team dropped a 3-1 decision to Finger Lakes Community College in the 7th place match. The Roadrunners split the first two sets with Finger Lakes CC. Amanda Hrivnak and Katelyn Boysen lead the way with six kills apiece. Mackenzie Michaels' clutch kill closed out the second set won by the Runners, 25-23.

Finger Lakes, however, won the final two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-15 to win the match and earn a seventh place finish overall.

Congratulations to the Roadrunners on their Fall 2021 season and for participating in the National Championship Tournament for the first time in school history!

In other action Saturday, No. 2 Owens will meet No. 1 seed Rock Valley in the National Championship final in a 5 pm EST start. No. 5 SUNY Broome will play No. 3 Minnesota State in the third place match and No. 6 Butler County meets No. 4 Central Lakes in the fifth place match.

Opening Day Action -- November 11, 2021

The Roadrunner Volleyball team made school history Thursday morning when they captured the program's first-ever win in a National Championship Tournament by edging Queensborough Community College 3-2 in five sets in first-round action.

With the win, the No. 8 Runners advanced to play No. 1 Rock Valley Thursday in a quarterfinal match at the Rochester (Minnesota) Regional Sports Center. Top-seed Rock Valley emerged victorious in the quarterfinal with a 3-0 win over the Runners. Coach Rebecca Pierson's team will now compete in a semifinal match against Central Lakes CC on Friday, Nov. 12 in a 3 pm start.

Against Queensborough, the Runners grabbed set one by a 25-22 score, set three by a 25-11 final, and the deciding fifth set by a 15-12 count in a nail-biter.

Playing well for Coach Rebecca Pierson's team were Dominique Marcano with 43 assists, Katelyn Boysen with 21 points and Amanda Hrivnak with 13 points. Summer Wroniuk collected 14 digs while Katie Burrichter added 13 digs and Devon Calhoun 12 digs.

"We were evenly matched with Queensborough, but we did play one of our best games of the season -- and that's why we won," commented Pierson. "Katelyn (Boysen) and Summer (Wroniuk) were absolutely on the mark. They were phenomenal the entire match."

The Runners had no such luck against No. 1 seed Rock Valley, which won in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-9, and 25-10.

"Rock Valley absolutely deserves to be the top seed -- I don't think any of the other teams are even close," said Pierson. "But it was still a great experience for our players to be on the same court with them so we could see what this level of competition is like."

Next up for the Runners will be No. 4 Central Lakes in a semifinal match on Friday, Nov. 12.

"We expect to be competitive in this match, but again it will take our very best effort," said Pierson. "This tournament has been a great experience for all the players and we've shown that we deserve to be here."
