Baseball Swept By St. Cloud Tech

Baseball Swept By St. Cloud Tech

On a night when good things were hard to accrue by the Anoka-Ramsey baseball team, a program-record 11-game winning streak was abruptly halted under the lights on the Wintercrest West field at the hands of St. Cloud Technical and Community College.

Thanks to some very tight pitching, St. Cloud swept a make-up MCAC-Central Division doubleheader May 3 by 4-2 and 10-5 scores in the scheduled seven-, then nine-inning games.

St. Cloud left-hander Logan Sandgren won a complete-game, first-game pitchers' dual with Anoka-Ramsey lefty Joe Lewis, allowing just four hits — three in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Anoka-Ramsey eased out to a 5-2 lead by the fifth inning of the second game, St. Cloud relief pitcher Eric Lampert took the mound at that point and slammed the door until he was replaced by the closer in the ninth. In fact — for the record — it was a stifling turn of events. After a run-producing single by first baseman Brennan Beese(Elk River) with no outs in the last of the fifth, Anoka-Ramsey was not allowed another hit for the rest of the game.

In all for the doubleheader, Anoka-Ramsey batters were limited to just 10 hits withBeese, third baseman Haven Williams (Osseo) and shortstop Zack Waalen(Somerset) collecting two each.

St. Cloud never trailed int he first game, but put together a couple of late rallies in the second game — five runs on seven singles in the seventh, then three runs thanks to an error and three hits in the top of the ninth — to come from behind and pull away at the finish.

The losses not only ended Anoka-Ramsey's 11-game winning streak, it also ended the team's stint as leader in the Central Division. By losing twice, Anoka-Ramsey subsequently fell one game behind St. Cloud in the division standings with a regular-season-ending doubleheader May 7 in St. Cloud to be played.
