HENDERSON, Nev. (May 10, 2019) – The No. 7 College of Southern Nevada baseball team has advanced to play for a Region 18 championships.
The Coyotes earned a berth in Saturday's Region 18 championship game with an impressive 8-0 semifinal victory over Salt Lake Community College at Morse Stadium. CSN didn't score until late but opened the collective floodgates by scoring all of their runs after the fifth inning. The late scoring flurry led to a run-rule victory.
Tied at 0-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, an error and a balk helped Southern Nevada take a 2-0 lead.
Steven Rivas then hit a two-run single to take a 4-0 lead. In the seventh inning,
Johnny Cuevas started the scoring with an RBI single, followed up by
Matt Wong hitting a two-run single.
Salt Lake mustered just four hits in the game as Region 18 Pitcher-of-the-Year
Nick Rupp mowed down the Bruins, striking out five batters while pitching a complete game of seven innings. SLCC had its best scoring opportunity in the fourth inning but a strikeout stranded runners at second and third base. The Coyotes defense forced three double-plays.
Wong finished 2-of-4 at the plate, finishing with a pair of RBI's. Rivas went 1-of-3 with two RBI.
Southern Nevada will play in the Region 18 championship game at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be played at Morse Stadium.
