Lady Texans thump Odessa 50-35 Thursday night at the Texan Dome

LEVELLAND — Mikayla Kuehne netted 12 points and Chantel Govan recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds as the South Plains College women's basketball team thumped Odessa College 50-35 Thursday night at the Texan Dome.

South Plains ends the year with a 17-13 overall record including a 4-10 mark in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

"I'm really proud of our one sophomore Maddie Dorris and I think this was the best game she's played this season," South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. "I thought she played well in her last game at the Texan Dome, and to pick up this win for her is great. This was a total team effort and our defense was solid throughout the course of the game. We didn't play well in the first half offensively, and we bounced back in the second half with a much better mentality."

Tied at 17 all at the midway point, South Plains took a 28-22 lead with 3:42 left in the third quarter on a jumper from freshman Christina Baker. Govan would extend the lead to nine, 36-27 with a 3 from the top of the key with 8:42 left in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Texans continued to hit home as Gabbie Green pushed the lead to 13 with a runner with under six minutes to go. Odessa would trim the deficit to nine on a pair of free throws from Julian McDonald, but the Lady Texans would once answer back as Dorris capped off the night and her last game in a South Plains uniform with a 3-ball from the right wing to put the Lady Texans up 15 with three ticks left.

"This means so much to go out with a win like this against Odessa, and all we wanted to do was go out and play as hard as possible, and we couldn't be happier with the result," Dorris said. "We came out in the second half with some fire and were able to get it done in the end. I feel like coach Petree and her team will get things rolling again next year, and now they this team has a season under their belt they're going to go out and do great things next season."

Dorris finished with 10 points and five boards over 27 minutes as the Lady Texans shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and were 4 of 5 from behind the arc. Baker netted seven points while Haleigh Hill and Green each finished with six.

Chinna Fair led Odessa with 10 points and three boards while Tanka Gapare and Shannon Dozier each had six. Odessa shot just 20 percent from the floor in the contest including 20 percent in the second half and was 1-for-24 from the 3-point line.
