Homeruns lift Marion Military over Co-Lin

WESSON, Miss. – The Lady Wolves fell to Marion Military Institute Saturday, Feb. 3 in game one of a double header, 14-5. The Lady Tigers of MMI took advantage of the long ball and run-ruled the Lady Wolves after six innings. The loss moved the Lady Wolves to 2-1 on the season.

Co-Lin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single from Julie Scheuermann that scored Paige Hulin. Morgan Dubose drove Sheuermann later in the inning with a line drive to left.

Marion Military responded in the top of the next frame scoring four. An error allowed one run, a fielder's choice brought in another, and a double drove in two more.

Co-Lin was not deterred when the Lady Wolves returned to the plate as Allison Livingston led off with a single. Callie Fortenberry reached base with another single two batters later. Scheuermann blasted a double that scored Livingston and moved Fortenberry to third. Bailey Root hit sac fly on her first pitch to bring Fortenberry home, tying the game at 4 all.

The Lady Tiger's Whitney Edgecomb hit a three-run homer in the top of the third to give MMI a 7-4 advantage.

The Lady Wolves scrapped one run across in the bottom of the third with a bunt from Hulin. The well-placed tap scored Dubose who reached base on a double. Co-Lin trailed 7-5 going into the fourth.

MMI took advantage of another homer in the fourth. The two-run shot gave the Lady Tigers a 9-5 lead.

The Lady Tigers had another big inning the top of the sixth as they plated five runs.

The Lady Wolves were unable to bounce back in the bottom of the sixth and fell to the Lady Tigers 14-5.

Bryndi-Alyn Ward was the winning pitcher for Marion Military Institute. She lasted four innings, allowing six hits and one run while walking zero.

Makenzie Smith took the loss for Co-Lin after she went one and one-third innings, allowing five runs on four hits and walking one.

Co-Lin posted 11 hits in the game. Scheuermann, Dubose, and Livingston all collected multiple hits for the Lady Wolves, while Scheuermann led Co-Lin with three hits in four at bats.

Marion Military Institute scattered eight hits in the game. Morgan Gaither and Danielle Phillips each collected multiple hits for the Lady Tigers.
