Women's Soccer advances to semifinals; Men's Soccer suffers loss

It was a split decision for the Tyler Junior College soccer squads against New York teams on Wednesday...

In Foley, Alabama, the No. 1 seed Apache Ladies downed Monroe Community College of Rochester, New York, 5-1, to win Pool A and advance to the national semifinals.

Later in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Apaches, who were shooting for a third straight national championship, fell to Monroe College of New Rochelle, New York, 2-0.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Corey Rose's Apache Ladies (21-1-1) are seeking back-to-back national titles and will play in the national semifinals against No. 5 Eastern Florida State (16-2-1) at 2:30 p.m. (CT) Friday.

The other semifinal has No. 2 Monroe (New York) College (14-0-1) meeting No. 3 Iowa Western (17-2-1) at 5 p.m. Friday.

The semifinal winners advance to the national title game, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

In the match with No. 8 Monroe CC, the Apache Ladies jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Five different Apache Ladies scored Patricia Estupinan, Hitomi Kono, Jullia Trabach, Marta Estupinan and Alyssa Wind.

Shalee Anaya had two assists with Patricia Estupinan and Akane Takada adding one each.

Katrina Yencer had an unassisted goal for the Tribunes.

Andrea Neves was in goal for the Apache Ladies, making four saves.

Iowa Western advanced out of Pool C, which included Navarro and Paradise Valley (Arizona).

MEN'S SOCCER

The loss to Monroe College snapped a string of six consecutive title game appearances for Steve Clements' Apaches.

TJC won championships in 2009 and 2010 before appearing in every final from 2012 to 2017. The Apaches won titles in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2017, while finishing second in 2013 and 2015.

It was the 10th straight appearance in the national tourney for Tyler and 14th overall. TJC finished third in the 2011 tourney.

Scoring goals for the Mustangs were Tobias Pellio (41:39) and Caio Guazzelli (81:05). Both were unassisted.

The Apaches had 11 shots and two on target, both by forward Dylan Bufton.

Other starters for the Apaches (19-3) were goalkeeper Neil Strauber, defenders Mus Qongo, Yohannes Richardson, Jake Morris and Jannik Videbaek; midfielders Jacob Daffern, Leon Karman, Habib Berry and Thaabit Barrtman; and forward Dion Macfoy-Johnston.

Strauber made seven saves.

Victor Camps was in goal for the clean sheet and had two saves.

The semifinals will have No. 1 Pima (Arizona) (24-2) vs. No. 7 Monroe (12-1-2) at 11 a.m. Friday and No. 3 Barton (Kansas) (20-1-2) vs. No. 5 Eastern Florida State (15-4-1) at 2 p.m.

The national championship is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.

Northeast Texas finished second in Pool A, falling to Pima 3-2 in overtime.
