Tiger tennis teams knock off a pair of NCAA Division II schools
The Cowley College men and women's tennis teams showed why they are ranked in the top-five of the NJCAA Division I national polls as they recently picked up wins over a pair of NCAA Division II schools. On Friday, both the Tiger men and women won 5-2 over host Northwest Missouri State University. Then, on Sunday, the Tiger women won 6-1 at Newman University and the Tiger men defeated Newman 4-3.
The matches were the first of the season for the Cowley men, while the Lady Tigers improve to 2-1 on the season.
"I am proud of how both the men and women's teams performed in these two matches," Cowley head coach Manuel Raga said. "We faced two strong teams and it was a very important win for our player's confidence going forward. Everything is starting to come along very well as far as the doubles and singles play. Win or lose, after every game we will get back to practice the next day to get better."
The Lady Tigers were led by the No. 1 doubles team of Laura Quezada and Lea Rebreyend going 2-0, while Quezada, Rebreyend, and Ane Ibarra each went 2-0 in singles play.
Javier Gonzalez led the Tiger men by going 2-0 in singles play, while the Cowley men had three different combinations of doubles team earn victories.
The Cowley tennis teams will now prepare to play at Cameron University Tuesday at 2 p.m. before facing top-ranked Tyler Junior College Friday at 9 a.m. in Plano, TX
"We are ready for the challenge and will do our best to put on a great performance against any team we play," Raga said.
