Lindsey-Terrell Lifts Phantoms to Season-Opening Win over Bucks

Newtown, PA—Javon Lindsey-Terrell's game-high 30 points helped the Delaware County Community College men's basketball team rally past host Bucks County Community College to open the season with an 81-71 victory on Tuesday night.

Bucks (0-1) took a 66-65 lead on a three-point play by Adjewoda Sanoumega with just under five minutes remaining to put the Centurions ahead. Lindsey-Terrell answered back from long range with 3:54 on the clock to give the Phantoms (1-0) a 68-66 lead they would not relinquish. Lindsey-Terrell's three-pointer, his fifth of the contest, propelled an offensive surge that saw DCCC outscore Bucks 16-5 over the final four minutes on the clock.

Lindsey-Terrell's first game in a Phantoms uniform was a memorable one as his 30-point performance included an 8-for-21 showing from the field (5-for-11 from behind the arc) and 9-for-11 effort from the free throw line. The 6-1 guard also chipped in a game-high six assists.

The DCCC offense was far from a one-man show as second-year forward Shawn Mendez started the season with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds. Mendez shot a scintillating 75 percent (9-for-12) from the field.

The Phantoms had a strong supporting cast as Jason Dunn stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists, and Marvin Freeman contributed solid minutes with six rebounds, four assists, and four points. Austin Fontaine added 11 points and a team-high four steals.

A solid first half by DCCC saw the visitors open up an 11-point lead (15-4) at the 12:50 mark on a layup by Fontaine. Bucks would close within one (27-26) with 5:35 left in the opening stanza before a 9-0 run over the next two minutes restored the Phantoms double-digit advantage (36-26).

The Centurions answered with a run of their own to tie the score at 36-36 with a minute left in the half, and then DCCC scored the final four points before the break to account for a 40-36 lead at intermission.

The two squads continued to battle after halftime as the Phantoms extended their lead to seven on a Dunn jumper just over two minutes into second-half play, before Bucks would come all the way back to take the lead, 55-54, on a Luis Rodriguez layup at 11:41.

Mendez helped DCCC wrestle back the lead at the 10-minute mark with an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Phantoms up 59-57. There would be four ties and five lead changes over the next six minutes until Lindsey-Terrell put DCCC up to stay.

The Phantoms went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the victory including a perfect 4-for-4 showing by Lindsey-Terrell.

DCCC shot 51.8 percent from the field for the game (29-for-56) and tallied 16 assists on the 29 made field goals. The Phantoms also won the rebounding battle (36-to-27) which helped account for 12 second-chance points.

Willie Seabrooks led the Bucks with 16 points.

DCCC gets right back into action on Thursday with a home contest against Lehigh Carbon Community College, which will be played at Cheyney University at 7 p.m.
