Men's soccer shines in first National Tournament contest.

The men's soccer team defeated Prairie State College 2-1 Tuesday afternoon in their opening match in the NJCAA Division II men's soccer tournament. In typical Mesa fashion the T-Birds were lifted by another second half surge that secured them the victory.

Dylan Hawley put the Pioneers on the board in the 13th minute as he snuck a header in off a corner kick. Trailing going into the second half isnt foreign territory for the T-Birds as they trailed after the first half of play four times this year.

After adjustments by Coach Ronan and the staff, Mesa was able to tie the game up on a Brevin Dorsey goal in the 59th minute. Dorsey scored after Marco Martinez set him up with an assist in front of the net to tie things up for the Thunderbirds.

In the 63rd minute Cole Wood would find himself in the right place at the right time as a Pioneer tried to clear the ball away from the goal but kicked it right to Wood who would shoot into the empty net to give Mesa the 2-1 advantage.

For the remaining 27 minutes of action Mesa beared down and was able to keep Prairie State at bay as they desperately tried to tie the game.

Andrew Powell was key for Mesa at keeping the Pioneers out of the goal as much as possible as he had a game high eight saves.

Tomorrow Mesa will take on No. 2 Jones College. Jones College was defeated by Prairie State College yesterday, 2-0. The game will kick-off at 12:30 pm.
