Second quarter costly for Lady Indians in loss to Lancers
The McCook Community College Lady Indians couldn't overcome a "clunker" of a second quarter Saturday and lost for the first time this season, falling to Eastern Wyoming 73-61 at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. The Lady Indians came out sharp in the first quarter finishing with an 18-14 lead and stretched it to six points at the 8:43 mark of the second quarter. Then Eastern Wyoming took charge of the quarter and out-scored the Lady Indians 33-11.
"We had a tough second quarter and that's what did us in," said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. "You lose a quarter by 22 points and you end up spending all your energy trying to climb back."
And climb back they did. After trailing 49-29 at the 9:50 mark of the third period the Lady Indians chipped away at the 20-point deficit and closed the gap to nine points at the end of the quarter, 57-49.
"We did do a nice job of continuing to battle and fought to cut the deficit in half with 10 minutes left to play, we can build off those things that we did right to come back, but we just have to play all four quarters," Pritchett said.
The Lady Indians kept battling and pulled to 63-61 with 4:01 left to play.
"We just didn't do a very good job tonight coming out of quarters, or coming out of timeouts," Pritchett said. "The last four minutes of the game we call a timeout and didn't score the rest of the game."
Freshman Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla Spain) led MCC with 19 points to go along with five rebounds. Sophomore transfer Paula Rosello Mateu, (Barcelona, Spain) scored 11 points. Sophomore Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) scored nine points and had a team-high eight rebounds.
MCC shot 45.1 percent from the field, made six of 23 shots from the arc (26.1 percent) made nine of 12 free throws (75 percent) and turned the ball over 22 times.
"Turnovers continue to hurt us, we're not going to be able to survive good teams if we don't take better care of the ball and if we don't shoot it better," Pritchett said.
Eastern Wyoming was 50.9 percent from the floor, four for 10 from the 3-point line and 10 of 16 (62.5 percent) from the line. The Lancers turned the ball over 20 times.
MCC goes to 4-1 on the season. On Friday and Saturday the Lady Indians will travel to Hesston, Kan. and play in a two-day tournament against Bethel College JVs Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday vs. Hesston. MCC returns home Nov. 22 against Western Wyoming.
