Jayhawks Lose Heartbreaker to Lorain County

ELYRIA, Ohio - Needing three overtime periods to determine a winner, the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team fell to Lorain County Community College Tuesday evening, 116-110.

 

The Jayhawks (0-7) had a pair of players record double-doubles on the night as forward Gonzalo Luque (Madrid, Spain/Instituto Ortega y Gasset) scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds (all defense) with forward Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) scoring 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds (3 offense, 11 defense). Guard Jafar Yahuza (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) had a team-high 27 points with guard Kareem O'Brian (West Babylon, NY/North Babylon HS) added 17 points with guard Clinique Jackson (Rochester, NY/East HS) chipping in with 14 points off the bench.

 

At the halfway point of the first half, JCC found themselves down 17-11 before battling back, going on a 9-2 run fueled by Gray with five points.

 

The Commodores were able to gain the lead back at the 7:05 mark to lead 21-20. Lorain County maintained the lead for the remainder of the half but the Jayhawk defense kept it to a two-possession game at the break.

 

Coming into the second half, the Jayhawks opened up scoring the first seven points, taking a 38-32 lead with buckets from O'Brian and Luque along with a three-pointer from Yahuza.

 

Maintaining the lead over a seven minute stretch, JCC couldn't push the lead more than a two-possession game. Lorain County tied the game at 53-53 with a three-pointer from Rod Harris with 10:13 left in regulation. Lorain County took the lead in their next possession to go up 55-53.

 

With the lead going back-and-forth, the Jayhawks went on a 12-0 run to open the game up 68-57 with just over five minutes remaining in regulation with Yahuza scoring seven during the span.

 

The Commodores battled back down the stretch, forcing overtime with a three-pointer from Javon Todd with the score at 79-79.

 

With neither team gaining an advantage in the first two overtime periods and much of the third, the Commodores took a four-point lead late in the final frame. The Jayhawks did cut it back to a two-point game but with time running out, Lorain County was able to ice the game with their last two possessions.

 

The Jayhawks went 40-for-83 (48.2 percent) from the field with the Commodores going 39-for-107 (36.4 percent) from the floor. Lorain County took advantage of their extra opportunities on offense, scoring 25 second chance points to the Jayhawks' seven second chance points.

 

The Jayhawks will have another opportunity to crack the win column, returning home tomorrow night for their first home game since the season opener as they host Butler County Community College at 7:30 p.m.
