Etienne’s Late Equalizer Helps No. 16 Chargers to 3-3 Draw With South Suburban

GALESBURG — Saul Etienne scored twice, including the equalizer in the 87th minute, to help the 16th-ranked Carl Sandburg College men's soccer team to a 3-3 draw with South Suburban on Wednesday in the Chargers' home opener at Kleine Field.

Sandburg (3-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 Region IV) came away with a result despite its two leading scorers — Jean Forestal and Guylberson Camille — sitting out because of injury.

The Chargers struck for the match's first goal in the third minute as Brais Sotelo Gonzalez's volley into the box found Etienne all alone on the left side, and he put it away for an early 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs, receiving votes in this week's NJCAA Division II poll, answered with goals in the fifth and 31st minutes to take a 2-1 lead, but Sandburg pulled even before halftime. Stenson Armand's centering pass from the left wing made its way to the top of the box, where Matteo Rissato Prado delivered a left-footed blast for a 2-2 score.

South Suburban regained the lead at 3-2 on a header in the 81st minute before Etienne was the recipient of some good fortune on his late equalizer. On a free kick from the left wing, Etienne's attempt deflected off the Bulldogs' wall, sailed high into the air and spun over the outstretched arms of the South Suburban keeper to force overtime. Etienne has collected a point in four straight games and has three goals and an assist in the Chargers' last two matches.

The teams played to a draw after a pair of scoreless 10-minute extra periods. Sandburg had the best chance in OT as Armand made a pass to Matheus Azevedo in the middle of the box in the 103rd minute, but his point-blank shot was turned aside by the Bulldogs' keeper.

Sophomore Ben Hilton made four saves in net for the Chargers.
