Comeback Falls Short For Lady Warriors vs. Co-Lin

The teams from Copiah-Lincoln came into Brackeen-Wood Gym in Decatur and left with a pair of basketball wins over East Central Community College in MACJC South Division action Monday, Jan. 14.

Trailing by 13 points entering the final period, the East Central Lady Warriors made a furious comeback before falling to the Co-Lin Lady Wolves 72-69.

In the men's action, the Co-Lin Wolves came out on top 78-74 in a physical game that was close throughout.

The ECCC Lady Warriors fell to 10-2 overall with the loss and 1-2 in MACJC South Division play. The Lady Wolves improved to 11-1 and 2-1.

The East Central Warriors are now 7-5 on the season and 0-3 in league play. The Co-Lin Wolves improved to 8-4 and 1-2.

Lady Warrior freshman guard Jariyah Covington of Starkville led all scorers in the women's game with 20 points. She also recorded five rebounds. Sophomore forward Whitney Waters of Heidelberg had 11 points and five steals in the game for East Central, and while sophomore forward Sharan Turner (Gonzales, La., East Ascension) scored 14 points, pulled down five rebounds, and had a pair of blocks. Sophomore guard Breanna Riley of Gulfport had a game-high nine assists.

East Central led 17-13 after the first period, before Co-Lin surged ahead 36-28 at the half. The Lady Warriors would win the fourth period 28-18, but it was not enough to overcome the Co-Lin lead. East Central shot just 38 percent from the floor for the game, while the Lady Wolves shot 54 percent.

The ECCC Warriors placed four players in double figures in the four-point loss to the Co-Lin Wolves.

Freshman guard Nick Preyer (Mobile, Ala., Leflore) led East Central for the second straight contest, scoring 17 points before fouling out. Sophomore guard Roti Ware of Morton contributed 14 points, while freshman forwards Dontavious Smith of Terry and JaQuarius Smith of Noxubee County and 11 and 10, respectively. Dontavious Smith had a game-high 11 rebounds.

There were a total of 55 personal fouls called in the game, with two players fouling out for each team. The teams combined to shoot 64 free throws.

The ECCC Warriors and Lady Warriors will hit the road to face Jones College in Ellisville in games set for 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Meridian Community College makes a trip to Decatur for games in Brackeen-Wood Gym at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
