Facing many of the top Region VI runners he will battle at the end of October, Hutchinson Community College sophomore Teagan Flanagan made sure his name will be among the favorites come postseason time.

Flanagan continued where he left off as a Blue Dragon freshman on Friday night at the season-opening Terry Masterson Twilight Classic at Fun Valley with an individual runner-up finish.

Flanagan's finish was one of four by Hutchinson in the Top 20 and helped the Blue Dragons to a third-place finish on Friday night. Allen captured the men's team title with 49 points, narrowly defeating Cowley for the title. The Tigers have 57 points. The Blue Dragons scored 61. Cloud County was fourth with 103, followed by Highland with 118, Dodge City with 125, MCC-Longview with 175 and Coffeyville with 233.

Flanagan dueled with Cloud County's Habtamu Geta for the race lead from the outside. The two traded the lead through the first two laps of the four-lap, four-mile Fun Valley Course. Geta started to pull away from Flanagan midway through the third lap and wound up winning the men's individual title with a time of 20:13.5. The second-straight Cloud County runner to win the Masterson Twilight men's title defeated Flanagan by 12.5 seconds.

Flanagan shredded his freshman Masterson time by 1 minute, 17 seconds on Friday night, posting a time of 20:26.0. That's the third-fastest Masterson time by a Blue Dragon and the eighth-fastest time overall in meet history.

Sophomore Jacob McElhanon put together a huge performance to become the second Blue Dragon finisher on Friday night. McElhanon was sixth overall with a time of 22:03.4.

Sophomore Matthew Schrag also had a strong 2020 season opener after finishing 13th in a time of 22:16.9. Schrag eclipsed his freshman Masterson time by 48 seconds.

The fourth Blue Dragon Top 20 finisher – the Top 20 individual runners are awarded t-shirts – was freshman Cameron Delaney. He was 19th in a time of 22:39.6

Sophomore Andrew Holt just missed the Top 20 with a 21st-place performance and a time of 22:46.8.

Freshman Aaron Geissinger placed 34th overall with a time of 23:37.7. Freshman Jareth Carrasco was 53rd in 25:41.8.

The Blue Dragons will next compete at the Muthama-Rogers Invitational at Bethel College in North Newton on September 19.
