The shortened 2021 season came to a close for the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team on Tuesday as the Panthers lost at home to #3-ranked Genesee Community College, 23-5.

Hosting Genesee in a rematch of an 8-3 loss in Batavia last month, the Panthers started strong, scoring the game's first goal in the fourth minute of action. Joey Shufelt (Dryden/Dryden H.S.) took a pass from Avery Watson (Watkins Glen/Watkins Glen H.S.) and found the net to put the Panthers up 1-0 and marking the first time this season Genesee has trailed in a game. The Cougars responded in force, going on a nine-goal run that took the game into the second quarter. Julian Mangino (Ithaca/Ithaca H.S.) ended the skid with a goal with 4:46 left in the second quarter, but Genesee went on another run – this time two goals before the half and then seven more in the third quarter to take a 18-2 lead into the final period. Shufelt and Watson combined on another goal to open the fourth and Alan Porter-Jackson (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson H.S.) netted a pair, the last coming off an assist from Zach Mallory (Homer/Homer H.S.).

The Panthers end the season with a record of 4-3, with the three losses coming to the nation's #3-ranked team (twice) and the #1-ranked team. In addition to the fourth winning season in the last five years, 2021 also marked the first time in program history the Panthers have won the Mid-State Athletic Conference championship.
