MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Walters State ran its winning streak to six straight games but saw its scoreless innings streak come to an end in the second game of Tuesdays home doubleheader sweep of Edison State at the Walters State Softball Complex.
The Lady Senators got a gem from Lauren Brickey and Delilah Malczewski in the opening game, as the five-inning shutout was backed up by an offensive explosion in a 13-0 victory. In the nightcap, Malczewski tossed three shutout innings to run her personal scoreless innings streak to 18, but the Chargers got a run in the fourth frame to end Walters State's 31-inning scoreless string in a 9-1 decision in five innings.
With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 12-10 on the season, while the sweep was on opening day for Edison State, an NJCAA Division II program located in Piqua, Ohio.
In the opener, Brickey improved to 3-1 on the year by going three innings and allowing two hits while striking out three batters in the contest. Malczewski tossed the final two innings, striking out three and giving up just one hit in relief.
On offense, the Lady Senators opened the day with nine runs in the first inning to set the tone for the afternoon, before adding a run in the second and three more in the third for the final tallies of the game.
Keeley Quillen had a big game, smacking a home run, her fifth of the season, and a double while driving in five runs in the win. Sydney Fox tagged two hits with a double and two RBIs, while Emily Whitaker added two hits with an RBI and Mia Edwardson slapped a double and plated a pair of runs.
Brickey, Jenica Brown and Sydney Dukes each added a single with an RBI, while Erin Foster added a single in the win.
In the nightcap, Malczewski moved to 5-4 on the year after allowing just two hits in three scoreless frames to get the win. Quillen came on in relief and allowed a run in the fourth inning and surrendered two hits in her two innings of work.
Offensively, WSCC led 3-0 after an inning and made it 4-0 in the third before the Chargers plated their lone run of the day. The Lady Senators pushed across five runs in the fifth to walk off with a mercy-rule victory.
Tia Wilson had two hits and drove in three runs to pace Walters State, while Quillen added two hits with her sixth homer of the year. Maggie Middleton added two hits with a double while playing two runs, and Edwardson hammered her fifth homer of the year in the win.
The Lady Senators will be back on the diamond this weekend with a four-game road series at Tennessee Community College Athletic Association rival Southwest Tennessee. The teams will play a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Friday followed by another twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
