The Butler Grizzlies continued their hot streak on Saturday night, defeating the Fort Scott Greyhounds 73-3 at BG Products Veterans Stadium on Saturday.
The Grizzlies improved to 5-2 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. The Grizzlies extended their winning streak to three games, in dominating fashion. Over those three games they've outscored their opponents 200-16. The Grizzlies defense hasn't given up a touchdown since the first quarter of the Highland game two weeks ago. The Grizzlies scored more than 70 points for a second consecutive game and eclipsed 500 total yards for the second straight time.
It was another complete showing for Butler tonight, eviscerating the Greyhounds on both sides of the ball. After an opening drive field goal, Jaxon Gibbs picked off a pass on the first defensive stand of the game. Butler gave up just 121 yards of total offense and Fort Scott went just 1 for 13 on third down conversions in the game and managed just five total first downs in the game.
The offense was just as effective, rushing for 347 yards as a team and passing for 399 yards, totaling 746 total yards. The team's last 700+ yard game came back in 2012 when they chalked up 714 yards in an 84-7 win at Independence. Quarterback Gavin Screws threw for two touchdowns and completed 12 of his 20 attempts for 217 yards. Darius Lassiter starred with three receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. Parìs Brown and Kevontae McDonald both had two touchdowns on the ground, running for 78 and 76 yards, respectively. Jordan Kempf had a great multipurpose game, recording four catches for 79 yards and a receiving touchdown as well as 5 carries for 45 yards, finding the end zone on the run as well.
With the win and Garden City's win over Coffeyville, the Grizzlies guaranteed a home game in the upcoming conference playoffs. The Grizzlies improved their overall record with the Greyhounds to 55-30-2 in a series that dates back to 1927. Butler has now won 39 of the last 41 games against Fort Scott and have won the last 12 matchups. Since 1975, Butler carries a 46-3-1 record in the series.
Butler will head to the road next week, hoping to extend their win streak when they travel to Garden City to face off against the Broncbusters on Saturday. Garden City handed Coffeyville their first loss of the season in Coffeyville Saturday night winning 0-0 over the Red Ravens. A Butler win next week will give the Grizzlies the No. 3 seed and they would host Dodge City or Highland on November 7th. A loss would make a Butler Hutch matchup in El Dorado on November 7th at 1:00pm.
