No. 15 Blinn scores 35 combined runs in sweep of Coastal Bend, 23-0 and 12-2

BEEVILLE, Texas - No. 15 Blinn College softball scored 35 combined runs and pitched one shutout in sweeping a doubleheader at Coastal Bend College by the scores of 23-0 and 12-2 on Saturday afternoon.

With the pair of victories, Blinn improves its overall record to 15-9 and 4-0 in Region XIV play.

Blinn 23 - Coastal Bend 0

Meghan Morris threw a shutout to help the Buccaneers defeat Coastal Bend 23-0 in five innings in the doubleheader opener.

Morris only surrendered one hit in five innings, while striking out four in order to improve her conference record to 2-0 in the circle.

Blinn's offense did much more than needed by pouring on 23 runs, while recording 20 hits in the victory.

Morgan Gray led Blinn with four RBIs, while scoring four runs and Tori Alvarez-Lopez followed with four RBIs and three runs. Sydney Gutierrez and Amy Alexander each drove in three runs and Gabriela Gomez drove in two.

Blinn started the scoring early on as Alvarez-Lopez scored a run on a fielder's choice to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Buccaneers kept the offense rolling the second inning to add three more runs to the board. Gomez brought home two runs on a single, while Gray scored on a groundout.

Blinn's offense continued heating up in the third inning as the Buccaneers scored eight runs to take a 12-0 lead. Alivia Villarreal hit a solo home run to give Blinn its first run of the inning, while Gray and Abby Olejniczak followed with one-run singles. Alvarez-Lopez kept the runs pouring in with a two-run double and Gutierrez followed with a one-run single. Amber Langston scored after Alexander was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Calli Birch drove in the final run of the inning with a single.

In the fourth inning the Buccaneers continued to have a slugfest as they scored nine runs to take a 21-0 lead. Sarah Cedillo scored the first run of the inning on a one-run single by Alvarez-Lopez, while Gray scored next on an error. Alexander drove in two runs with a single, while Cedillo followed with a one-run hit. Gray doubled to tack on two more runs and then scored the final run of the inning on an error.

In the fifth inning Blinn scored the final two runs of the game after Langston hit a home run and Georgina Gonzales scored on an error for Blinn to take a 23-0 victory.

Blinn 12 - Coastal Bend College 2

The final game of the doubleheader wasn't as lopsided although the Buccaneers totaled 18 hits and scored in every inning to defeat Coastal Bend 12-2 in five innings.

Kassidy Rhoudes remains undefeated in the circle this conference season after picking up her second win against a Region XIV opponent. She surrendered two runs on five hits, while striking out two.

Gutierrez led the offense with four RBIs, while Alvarez-Lopez, Langston and Villarreal each drove in two runs. Villarreal led Blinn with three runs scored, while Gray, Gutierrez and Alvarez-Lopez each scored two.

Gutierrez put three runs on the board with one swing of the bat after hitting a home run in the first inning, while Villarreal scored on a fielder's choice for Blinn to take an early 4-0 lead.

In the second inning, Villarreal hit a two-run homer for the Buccaneers to pull ahead 6-0.

In the third inning, Blinn added four more runs to the board to gain a 10-0 advantage. Alvarez-Lopez drove in one run with a single, while Langston drove in two runs with a double for Cedillo, Gray and Olejniczak to score. Alvarez-Lopez scored the final run of the inning on a groundout.

In the fourth inning, Alvarez-Lopez hit a single to score Gray as Blinn took an 11-0 lead.

Coastal Bend finally got on the board with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Blinn answered back with one run in the top of the fifth inning after Makalah Norman hit a one-run single to score Villarreal.

Coastal Bend tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning before falling 12-2.

Blinn will be back in action for its conference home opener against Lamar State College-Port Arthur on Friday, March 16. The first game of the doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. at Hohlt Park.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 36 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
