Late Free Throws Lead Apache Ladies Past Panola

CARTHAGE - Sky'lynn Holmes hit for 28 points, while Nautica Grant and LaKendra Bassett connected on key free throws in the final seconds as the No. 21 Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies scored an 88-85 win over the Panola Fillies on Saturday.

Holmes had a double-double with 11 rebounds as the Apache Ladies won their seventh straight game to improve to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in Region XIV Conference women's basketball.

The Fillies fall to 12-5 and 3-4.

The Fillies got off a shot, but Grant rebounded with 5.5 seconds showing. The sophomore guard from Dallas swished both free throws for an 88-85 advantage. The buzzer went off before Panola could attempt a 3-point shot.With the game tied at 85-85, Bassett was fouled with 14.4 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter. After missing the first free throw the sophomore guard from Fort Worth drained the second to give TJC the lead, 86-85.

The Apache Ladies trailed 44-36 at halftime, but sizzled in the third quarter with 34 points to take a 70-67 lead. Holmes had 13 points in the period.

Genesis Riveria, a sophomore forward from Caracas, Venezuela, led the Fillies with 24 points. Patience Okpe, a freshman point guard from Makurdi, Nigeria, added 18 points.Joining Holmes, a sophomore post who starred at Pine Tree High School, in double-figures scoring were Bassett (17 points), Grant (15) and Erin Smith (12).

The Apache Ladies return home on Wednesday to face San Jacinto. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Wagstaff Gymnasium.
