The Butler Grizzlies won their second straight game in convincing fashion, trouncing the Mcdougle Technical Institute Bison, 86-6 at BG Products Veterans Stadium on Saturday.
The Grizzlies started fast, forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff of the game and scoring just 9 seconds into regulation on a six yard rush from Adarius Thomas. The score was the fastest ever touchdown from scrimmage in Butler history. The Grizzlies never relented, with Thomas scoring his second touchdown four minutes later, as the Grizzlies would go on to score 44 points in the first quarter. That 44 points was just 12 short of the school record, when Butler scored 56 in one quarter against Hutchinson in 2005. The Grizzlies defense forced two fumbles and two sacks in the first quarter, and they also forced the Bison into a safety.
The Grizzlies dominated offensively, accounting for 524 yards of total offense. Butler outgained the Bison by nearly 500 yards. The Grizzlies put up 411 yards on the ground, coming short of the record for most rushing yards in a game, which is 567 yards set in 1950. The Grizzlies 86 points was just three short of the school record for points scored in a game.
Kevontae McDonald led the way for the Grizzlies on the ground, racking up 100 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. The Grizzlies had three players rush for 80 yards or more, and the team combined for 10 rushing touchdowns.
It was also a dominant performance defensively, the Grizzlies combined for two sacks and three turnovers. Butler's defense gave up hardly anything all game, allowing just 29 yards of total offense during the game. The Bison succeeded on just one of 15 third down plays, and they were successful on only one of five fourth down plays. It was the second game in a row that the Grizzlies gave up just one touchdown, and that was on a Mcdougle 90 yard kickoff return late in the second half.
On the day that saw Butler's legendary coach Troy Morrell inducted into the Grizzlies Athletic Hall of Fame, it was the type of dominant performance that was reminiscent of the teams that Morrell coached for nearly 20 years.
The Grizzlies (4-2) will hope to continue their winning ways next Saturday, returning home to BG Products Veterans Sports Complex to host the Fort Scott Greyhounds for homecoming at 7:00.
