Blazer Matt Jordan uses back-nine eagle to win VU Spring Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ind. – Trailblazer sophomore golfer Matt Jordan completed his sweep of VU Invitationals this year after winning the Fall tournament in October by winning the Spring Invitational Sunday at Country Oaks Golf Club.

Jordan got off to a quick start Saturday in the first round of the two-day tournament by posting a one-under 71 in the rain.

Jordan came back Sunday, holding a two-stroke lead. Logan Vernon of St Mary of the Woods closed the gap and tied Jordan at the top of the leaderboard with just three holes to go.

Jordan answered back quickly with an eagle on 16, which would be the difference as a second-round 78 gave the Blazer golfer his second tournament win in a row.

"This was just a super effort from Matt. It's really hard to win two times in a row in golf. The mental and the physical aspects of doing that are really difficult," VU Golf coach Dennis Chattin said. "Doing that in a tournament that he won before adds to that element even more and so I just can't say enough about the effort that took. I think it started to show on him at little bit in the final round and the final hole while trying to get it in the house is really hard, but that's hard to duplicate round after round."

Vincennes as a team finished third out of seven teams, just three shots out of second place behind Rend Lake.

Vincennes posted two big improvements from Saturday to Sunday from Bryce Kirchner and Jackson Roberts. Kirchner cut his score down by 10 shots Sunday and Roberts cut 15 shots.

Cole Parmer was consistent all tournament, shooting an 82 Saturday and 83 Sunday. Brock Craney finished his opening round with an 81 and ended the tournament with an 87 Sunday.

"I think this was a team effort, we had a couple of guys down in the order that played well yesterday," Chattin added. "Brock having a second-place finish within the team and Jackson getting his score counted today was a big improvement today. Bryce Kirchner, normally one of our strong standbys and he came back from a really tough round for him. That wasn't a normal thing for him at all, but to improve 10 shots and come back was really a major deal."

The Trailblazers will hit the road Monday, April 26 as they look for another strong showing at the Spring MWAC Conference Tournament at Champaign Country Club in Champaign, Ill.

"I think we can have a good finish in Champaign, it is difficult, it is an odd scheduling event that caused us to have to play four rounds in three days. We didn't know when the Conference Tournament was going to be scheduled until late and we already had this tournament scheduled with nine team originally coming in, so to cancel the tournament wouldn't have been fair to those teams. Unfortunately we've chosen to just grit it out and we'll go up there tomorrow and play 36 holes and do the best we can at looking at the golf course online and try to prepare that way."
