Scotties go 3-1 in Triton Invitational

The Scottie volleyball team (20-11) traveled to Fort Dodge, Iowa to participate in the Triton Volleyball Invitational. The team had a successful weekend as they went 3-1 on the weekend beating North Iowa Area CC, Iowa Central CC, and Iowa Lakes CC while losing to #16 Des Moines Area CC.

In the first game of the tournament against NIACC, Leslie Polanco lead the team with a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs Tyrecia Lukes contributed 11 kills and 1 solo block while Marianna Falls and Shailey Caudle added 9 and 8 kills respectively. Megan Rhule dished out 34 set assists while Koie Orozco worked well with Lukes and Falls as she had 3 block assists during the 3 set win. The set scores were: 25-22, 25-14, 25-20.

Lukes and Polanco showed out in the intense 5 set win verse Iowa Central as Lukes tied her career best 17 kills and Polanco was 1 digs short of her career high digs with 23. She also added in 2 solo blocks and 9 kills. Lukes added 2 solo blocks to her total season blocks of 53 which has her sitting in 5th in the KJCCC. Emily Nelson had a great defensive showing with 14 digs and Falls contributed 9 digs, 13 kills, and 4 block assists along with 5 block assists and 1 solo block by Orozco. Caudle did not disappoint as she contributed 9 kills and 8 digs along with teammate Josie Vitosh with 9 digs. Rhule controlled the offense with 46 set assists, 5 digs, 1 service ace, and 2 kills. Set scores were: 21-25, 26-24, 25-11, 19-25, 15-9.

The loss verse DMACC was tough as the Scotties had previously lost in a close 5 set match to them earlier this month and were looking for a win. The 3 set match was in the hands of Des Moines Area as the Scotties had a tough time scoring. Rhule controlled the offense with 25 set assists, Lukes leading with 9 kills followed by Polanco and Falls each with 5. Sophomore Vitosh led the defense with 10 digs along with freshman outside hitter, Polanco, also contributed 10 digs. Rhule and Falls both added in 7 digs on the match. Set scores for the 3 set loss against DMACC: 17-25, 24-26, 15-25.

HCC earned a quick 3 set victory over Iowa Lakes CC in their last game of the tournament. Lukes put down 12 kills, 4 solo blocks, and 2 digs. The team had a great blocking game as they totaled 14 blocks. With a hitting percentage of .296, Rhule controlled that offense with 26 set assists. Set scores for the 3 set win against Iowa Lakes CC: 25-15, 25-16, 25-19.
On the weekend, the Scotties put up an impressive 38 block assists and 15 solo blocks. The team had a total of 154 kills, 16 service aces, 175 digs, and 144 set assists.

The HCC volleyball team is now 23-12 on the year and 5-3 in conference. The team will travel to Arkansas City, Kansas on Wednesday, October 26th to play in their last conference match up against 7-1, 23-8 Cowley County Community College at 6:30pm.
