HENDERSON, Nev. (May 11, 2019) – In sports, there are few emotions that meet the joy that is elicited from uttering the word "champs".
The No. 7 College of Southern Nevada baseball team will get to experience that joy for the remainder of this season as they remember the Region 18 championship claimed with an impressive victory over the College of Southern Idaho. CSN downed CSI 7-1 in the Region 18 championship game on Saturday at Morse Stadium, returning to the top of the heap in the league.
The Coyotes trailed the game early, 1-0, before shutting down the Golden Eagles the remainder of the way in the win. With
Buddy Pindel pitching, Southern Nevada limited CSI's offense to six hits and one run. In contrast, CSN cut up Southern Idaho with 12 hits that forced CSI's hand.
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning,
Jack Pineda hit a two-run single that gave CSN a lead they would never relinquish, followed up by a
Johnny Cuevas two-run single. With a 4-1 lead in the seventh inning,
Nick Hernandez hit a single to left-field, followed up by
AJ Amelburu hitting a two-run single.
Cuevas, Pineda, Hernandez and
Matt Wong all had multi-hit games, with Pineda, Cuevas and Amelburu also posting a pair of RBI's each. Pindel earned the pitching win with 8.1 innings of one-run ball, striking out six Golden Eagles in the game.
The win boosts Southern Nevada's overall record on the season to 44-10. CSN has now won the Scenic West regular-season title and the Region 18 title. Next up for the Coyotes will be the NJCAA Western District Championships at the Region 9 champion's venue. That tournament will take place next weekend.
