#10 Red Ravens Move to 2-0 On The Season, Defeat Dodge City 22-13

Coffeyville, Kan. - The #10 NJCAA ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football Team defeated the Dodge City Conquistadors 22-13 on Military/First Responders Appreciation night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.  With the victory, the Red Ravens move to 2-0 on the season including 2-0 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) games.

The Ravens jumped onto the scoreboard first with just a little over three minutes off of the game clock, Coffeyville's freshman running back Star Thomas ripped off a 51-yard touchdown run.  Red Raven freshman Forrest Taylor's PAT was no good and Coffeyville had a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.

However, Taylor made up for his missed PAT by hitting a 38-yard field goal roughly five minutes later to give the Ravens a 9-0 lead at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter.  Taylor's leg was starting to feel really good as he drilled another field goal, this time a 39-yard one at the 14:54 mark just into the second quarter.  The Raven lead was mounting at 12-0.

Dodge City found some life immediately after as they were able to find the end zone with a four-yard touchdown pass and a good extra point to pull within 12-7 at the 10:44 mark of the second quarter.

At the end of the second quarter, the Ravens found pay dirt again with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Coffeyville's sophomore quarterback Jakson Thomson to sophomore wide receiver Chris Bellamy.  Taylor converted the PAT and the Raven's again extended their lead out to 19-7 with 1:05 left in the half.  Coffeyville would hold the Conquistadors the rest of the half and go into halftime with the 19-7 lead.

The third quarter saw Dodge City convert on a couple of field goals (27 and 31 yards) to pull within 19-13 to start the fourth quarter.

The Ravens again pulled placekicker Forrest Taylor's leg out of the bag to hit a long 47-yard field goal to put them up by two scores at 22-13.

Coffeyville's defense managed to keep the Conquistadors off the scoreboard the rest of the quarter and the Ravens survived with the 22-13 victory.

The offensive production was almost identical for both teams, 308 yards for Coffeyville and 305 for Dodge City.  Coffeyville had 213 yards of rushing compared to 146 for Dodge City.  However, Dodge City had 159 yards through the air compared to 95 for the Ravens.

Red Raven freshman running back Dorian Lewis led Coffeyville with 93 yards on 12 carries for an average of 7.8 yards a carry.  Freshman Star Thomas had 86 yards on 15 carries for an average of 5.7 yards a carry.  Defensively, the Red Ravens were led by freshman linebacker Reise Collier who was credited with 20 total tackles.

Coffeyville will have the next week off with a bye in the schedule and will return to action with their homecoming game scheduled against Highland Community College on Saturday, September 25th.  The kickoff in Veterans Memorial Stadium is set for 7:00 pm.
