Highland Softball Takes Two Against Coffeyville

April 5

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Highland softball picked up another sweep this season claiming a pair of KJCCC wins over Coffeyville at home claiming a 12-2 five inning win and 8-1 victory.

With the sweep the Scotties improved to 19-7 on the season and 8-2 in Conference play and currently sit in second place in the Conference standings but own the most wins in Conference play of any team.

Game one saw the Scotties wake up the bats early as Highland got the scoring rolling in the bottom of the first inning with Isabella Konieczka leading off the inning with a walk followed by a pair of singles and the Scotties were on the board, while Alyssa Wesley had a RBI double later in the inning and Highland led 4-0 after one inning. The offensive production continued in the second inning as the Scotites batted around and plated eight runs on four hits, a Coffeyville error, hit batter and walk. Both Hannah Schmidt and Sirena Salazar each had an RBI single, while Alexis Hodapp notched a two RBI single in the eight run second helping Highland lead 12-0 after just two innings. The Scotties were in cruise control from that point on as Coffeyville did manage two runs in the fourth but the Scotties worked around a hit and error in the fifth to secure the 12-2 five inning win.

Bailey Lacy earned the win in the circle tossing three innings giving up just two hits and a hit batter, while not surrendering a run; Allyssa Griggs tossed the final two innings to finish out the game. Cassidy Greer was 2-3 at the plate with a double, two RBI's, two runs scored, a stolen base and reached on an error, while Konieczka went 2-3 with two runs scored, a walk and stolen base. Sara Shinn drew a pair of walks and scored two runs, while Schmidt was 1-1 with two RBI's and a walk.

Scotties looked to strike early in game two just like game one but an out at home spoiled a run in the bottom of the first and in the second the Scotties left a pair of runners on leaving the game scoreless through two innings. Highland would not be denied at the plate as the Scotties in the third sent three to the plate and scored three runs on three hits. The fourth inning was more of the same as the Scotties nearly batted around and scored three more runs using a Coffeyville error, three walks and a two RBI single by Chevelle Sartin. That three output in the fourth came after Coffeyville scored their lone run of the game on a solo home run in the top of the inning. Another run came across for Highland in the fifth without recording a hit, while Sartin blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning to make it 8-1 and the Scotties threatened to run-rule the contest in the bottom of the sixth leaving the bases loaded in the inning. In the top of the seventh Highland set Coffeyville down in order and secured the 8-1 win and sweep of the Red Ravens.

Kelly Uthe was stout inside the circle as she tossed five innings giving up just one run on two hits and struckout two, while Sarah Bond finished out the game tossing the final two innings. Sartin helped led the offense going 2-2 with three RBI's and home run, while Konieczka went 2-4 a run scored and stolen base. Griggs put together a 2-3 performance with an RBI, run scored and walk, while Elizabetha Hays was 1-3 with two runs scored and reached on an error.

Scotties are set to wrap up another busy week with another KJCCC clash as they are set to battle #12 Cowley in Arkansas City, Kansas on Saturday, April 6th with the doubleheader slated for a 1:00pm start time. Highland will then return home and host Neosho County on Monday, April 8th for another afternoon KJCCC twinbill.
