Jayhawks Fall on Sophomore Day

JAMESTOWN – Closing out their final home game of the regular season, the Jamestown Community College men's basketball team fell to Erie Community College Sunday afternoon, 109-72.

 

The Jayhawks (2-23, 0-7 Region 3) had five players score in double figures lead by forwards Gonzalo Luque (Madrid, Spain/Instituto Ortega y Gasset) and Traden Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) who each had 15 points. Eglin Oliver (Monroeville, PA/Gateway Senior HS) and Jafar Yahuza (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) added 13 points each while Bam Toure (Jamaica, NY/St. Johns Prep) chipped in with 12 points.

 

Gray led the team on the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds (1 offense, 9 defense) with Luque and Toure adding seven boards each.

 

Both teams traded blows for a good portion of the first half of action including a string of four-straight three-pointer between the two teams. The Kats took a 19-16 lead at the 9:58 mark with a three-pointer from Nathan Stevenson but Luque responded with a three of his own after the pass from Oliver. Jesse Adamu went back the other way, cashing a three-pointer. Gray responded with a three-pointer of his own to square things up at 22-22.

 

The three-pointer from Gray helped spark nine unanswered point from the Jayhawks to make it 28-22 with just over seven left in the first half. The Kats responded by going on a 16-5 run to go into the break, up 38-33.

 

In the second half, the Jayhawks got with two possession on numerous occasions but could not take advantage.

 

JCC went 21-for-52 (40.4 percent) from the field while ECC went 41-for-81 (50.6 percent) from the floor. The Kats held the advantage on the glass, grabbing 44 rebounds to the Jayhawks' 36.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Wednesday, February 16th, as they travel to No. 12 Niagara County Community College for a 7:30 p.m. start.

 

Prior to the game, head coach Xavier Churnac recognized sophomores Yahuza and Josh Bowmer (Kiama, New South Wales, Australia/Kiama HS) for their hard work and dedication to the program for the two seasons they were with the team.
