WNCC goes 4-0 in the Salt Lake Invite

                SALT LAKE CITY -- THe Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team made it a perfect weekend at the Crystal Inn'vatational at Salt Lake Community College over the weekend, finishing the tournament with a perfect 4-0 mark.

                The Cougars won two five-set matches on Friday over No. 2 College of Southern Idaho and North Idaho College. Saturday saw the Cougars stay sharp by dropping No. 8 Salt Lake Community College (20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-16) and then take out Snow College (17-25, 25-9, 25-18, 25-22).

                The wins pushes the Cougars' record to 10-2 and their win streak to eight games.

                WNCC coach Binny Canales  was happy with how the team performed over the weekend.

                "Overall we played well. We were very aggressive," he said. "Sometimes we went a little flat but they picked it up when they had to. They competed well."

                Canales said Friday's win over No. 2 College of Southern Idaho was huge and then to top No. 8 Salt Lake on Saturday was big.

                "Those two wins were huge," he said. "We had a lot of energy and the girls were ready. We had a good game plan against both teams. They executed well. We still need to work on a few things but they are both good teams and they have beat some good teams."

                After the opening weekend, where the Cougars went 2-2, losing tough matches to Iowa Western and Jefferson, Canales said they are playing better.

                "They are competing and they are trusting each other," he said. "We still need to improve every week because all these teams are getting better. We have fix a few things with our footwork and keep the energy with our attacking. We have a good foundation and we are progressing well.:"

                In both matches on Saturday, WNCC lost the first set and then won the next three to get the wins.

                Against Salt Lake, Barbara Rabanel finished with a double-double to pace the Cougars. The freshman from Lima, Peru had 12 points and 14 kills. Fabiana Andrade also had a double-double with 12 digs, 38 set assists, and two points.

                WNCC also got eight kills and fur digs from Shaney Tiumalu and six kills, 12 digs, and eight points from Lara Picht. Keala Kaio-Peres tallied 19 digs and nine points; Jady Gerotto had 10 points, two aces and two kills;  Maraea O'Connor and Alwaise Villa each had four digs.

                Rabanel paced the Cougars against Snow with another double-double. Rabanel finished with 17 kills, 11 digs, and eight points.

                WNCC also got 13 kills from Gerotto. Gerotto also eight points and an ace.

                Andrade finished with 37 set assists, three points, seven digs, and four kills; Kaio-Perez had 16 digs and four points; Tiumalu had seven kills; Picht had nine kills, six points, Katy Ernest with eight digsand 14 points; Fuatino Manu with six digs; and two digs; and two kills each from O'Connor, Kennedy Cyza, and Kaylee Spreier.

                WNCC will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Torrington, Wyoming, to face Eastern Wyoming at 7 p.m. The Cougars will then compete in the Pizza Hut Classic in Sterling, Colorado, where they will face No. 3 Northwest College, who swept Southern Idaho this weekend.
