Owls Defeat Thaddeus Stevens Behind Cooke’s Double-Double

The Prince George's Community College men's basketball team earned their first victory of the 2021-22 season with an 87-81 road win over Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology on Saturday afternoon, November 6th. The Owls, who were facing their second consecutive Division 3 opponent out of Region 19 to open the season, were led by Deonte Cooke (Seat Pleasant, MD) off the bench with a 20 point, 10 rebound double-double.

The Owls entered halftime with a 10-point lead (44-34) against the Bulldogs on Saturday, a similar scenario to earlier in the week when Prince George's held a 15-point halftime lead against Northampton as they entered the break before ultimately falling to the Spartans, 85-70. This time around, coach William West made sure his team held on to pick up the first victory for Prince George's in 624 days, a convincing 119-81 win over Pennsylvania Highlands in the 2019-20 Region 20 Division 3 semifinals on February 22nd, 2020.

Cooke led the Owls in scoring while freshman Alonzo Wilkes (Pasadena, MD) also picked up a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds. Fellow Freshman Anthony Perry (Bowie, MD) just missed out on his second consecutive double-double to begin his collegiate career with 9 points, 10 rebounds. The Owls saw a drastic improvement in their shooting performance compared to their season opener, hitting on nearly 54% of their shots from the floor on Saturday versus only 35% in their season opener.

Prince George's will face Garrett College at home for their next matchup, scheduled for Wednesday, November 10th at 7 pm, or 20 minutes following the women's game which is planned to tip-off at 5 pm. Spectators are currently not allowed inside Novak Field House for contests.
