Jayhawks Down the Kats; Named WNYAC Champions

BUFFALO - It was a milestone meet for the Jamestown Community College women's swimming & diving team Monday evening, capturing the Western New York Athletic Conference Championship title, defeating Erie Community College 106-44.

 

"It was great to get the conference championship for JCC," said head coach Todd Conklin, coaching in his first season. "These kids have been working very hard and knew this was one of our goals. We have other goals to accomplish but getting to bring the first one home has been great."

 

The Jayhawks (4-0, 4-0 WNYAC) were led by freshman Tia Moppert (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda Central), setting a new mark in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:08.35. The previous record was set by Nicole Mattys in 2013, swimming a time of 1:08.66. Moppert also posted a first-place finish in the 100 yard IM with a time of 1:11.29, a new personal best.

 

"Our team was again on the side of some record breaking performances," said Conklin. " Karianne and Tia both had outstanding meets while Megan continues to improve. Lillian had had her best performance to date."

 

Sophomore Karinne Yuchnitz (Panama, NY/Panama Central) also had a great meet, finishing first in the 50 yard freestyle (25.02) and in the 100 yard freestyle (56.83).

 

Freshman Megan Stang (Perrysburg, NY/Gowanda Central) had two first-place finishes on the evening, winning the 500 yard freestyle (6:52.61 and in the 200 yard breaststroke (3:12.24).

 

Freshman Jade Vidas (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Parktown HS for Girls) posted a first-place finish in the 200 yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 2:22.40. Vidas also set new personal bests in the 100 yard butterfly (1:09.94) and the 100 yard freestyle (1:10.44).

 

Freshman Anna Burt (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) set personal bests in the 200 yard freestyle (2:35.18) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:45.73).

 

Freshman Lillian Baer (Jamestown, NY/Maple Grove HS) posted a personal best in the 100 yard IM with a time of 1:15.81.

 

Freshman Alyssa Hanesworth (Randolph, NY/Randolph HS) had a career day in the pool, setting a new personal best in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 32.51.

 

JCC set the tone of the match, winning the 400 yard medley relay with the team of Burt, Baer, Moppert, and Yuchnitz with a time of 4:46.48. The quartet set a new mark in the event which was previously set in 2014.


"Overall, we'll take the championship," Conklin said. "But we all know there are more things to accomplish this season."

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday, April 3rd, as they compete in the ECC Tri-Meet against ECC and Roberts Wesleyan College.
