Late Score by Hutchinson Foils Highland's Comeback Attempt

The Scotties have grown accustom to playing close games and having to come from behind also and Saturday was no different as the contest with Hutchinson went down to the wire and was decided by three points as Highland fell 16-13 on a field goal in the final 20 seconds of the game by the Blue Dragons.

Playing under gray and dreary skies and some rain the game got off to a slow start with both teams as the first quarter ended with no score. The best chance in the first stanza for points came when Reco Hannah forced a fumble by Hutchinson quarterback, Mason Schucker and the recovered it around midfield. The Scotties ended up setting up for a 53-yard field goal try by Ryan Schemtob but it was blocked.

The first points of the game came early into the second quarter as Hutchinson capped a six play drive covering 54 yards with a 10-yard touchdown run by Jonathan White making 7-0 with 11:40 left in the first half. The Scotties answered by getting into the redzone and scoring themselves as Avery McCall hit Antavious Cook for 39-yards and that lead to a 23-yard field goal by Schemtob to make it 7-3. Highland had an opportunity just before halftime for perhaps more points but the Blue Dragons stymied the Scotties pushing the game to intermission at 7-3 Hutchinson lead.

Lead for Hutchinson grew to 10-points at the 8:50 mark in the third quarter as Hutchinson put together an eight play 80-yard drive that ended with a Dezmon Jackson five-yard touchdown. After a conversion try the game was 13-3 in favor of Hutchinson. Scotties did have another quick answer as Schemtob split the uprights for the second time in the contest this time from 38-yards making it 13-6 with 6:32 left in the third quarter.

Down a touchdown Highland got the ball back with 4:40 on the clock in the fourth quarter and put together another late game scoring drive. After a pair of penalties against Hutchinson kept the drive alive for the Scotties it was Kevin Brown with a big 64-yard run on a second down and 29 getting the Scotties down to the two-yard line. On the next play McCall scored a touchdown on the quarterback keeper and with the extra point Highland tied the contest 13-13 with 1:59 remaining.

Hutchinson used the time left to move down the field behind the rushing attack of White and Jackson and ultimately got set for a 36-yard field goal which Sebastian Garcia made with 15 seconds remaining and while the Scotties had a couple of plays before the final ticks came off the clock Hutchinson ultimately grabbed the 16-13 win.

For the second straight week the Highland offense struggled to consistently move the ball managing just 180 yards of total offense, while Hutchinson gained 340 total yards. Both teams finished the matchup with a pair of turnovers each. Brown led the Scottie offense with 92 yards rushing on 19 carries, while McCall was 16-29 for 87 yards and a rushing touchdown and Cook led the team in receiving with two catches for 50 yards. On defense Donnell Lowery had nine tackles, while Damarion Williams, Darius Johnson and Ronald McGee each had seven tackles. Yacht Jones had two sacks of the teams five on the day.

The loss moves the Scotties to 4-2 on the season and 2-2 in KJCCC play has Highland heads into the Bye week. The three-point loss is the second straight loss to Hutchinson by three points and 12th game of the last 16 games played decided by single digits. Next up for Highland is a date with #3 Garden City on the road on Saturday, October 20th with 1:00pm kickoff.
