It was a good day for the Cyclones at the Warrior Invitational at Wisconsin Lutheran College in West Allis, WI. Over the hilly 8K course, the men placed fifth out of eight teams.
Andrew Sima has been dealing with a minor injury, which kept him out of running most of the week; he still crossed the line first for the Cyclones in 28:44.41 in 17th place out of 75 runners. "For him to tough it out and perform the way he did speaks to the kind of runner he is," said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas.
Joel Vargas-Cortes was not far behind in 29:14.69 in 21st. "Joel's attitude and confidence at practices is starting to show up at the meets, which has been so nice to see. He ran a lifetime PR and is gaining the confidence needed at this point in the season," Dimizas said.
Coming in nearly one after the other were Demario Angarita (30:17.60, 30th), Noah Rigoni-Kreczmer (30:18.46, 31st) and Santana Garcia (30:27.16, 33rd). "These three worked with and against each other at different parts of the race, and sometimes that's all I can ask for," Dimizas noted.
Jacob Madera made some improvements, finishing in 30:50.64 in 37th. Brennan Rudolph was running well before getting tripped up in the woods and falling, but he got right back up and finished strong in 32:23.55 in 51st. Jesse Correa has been consistent with his racing and put up another good time (33:42.96, 58th). Robert Slezak has been hunting for a sub 35-minute time all season and got it definitively in this race (34:26.01, 61st).
"Even though there weren't a lot of PRs, the men still ran really well," Dimizas said. "The men have their eyes set on another conference title, but we'll need everyone healthy and ready to go in two weeks for that to happen."
