Vernon Norwood - South Plains College (TX) Track & Field
Vernon Norwood has made a great impact on the NJCAA, not only through his ability in athletics, but also through his character. Norwood attended South Plains College in 2011 to 2013 and was a member of the Track and Field team.
During his time as a Texan, Norwood was a six-time NJCAA All-American, running on the 4x400 meter relay teams. Through his abilities, he led the Texans to victory on many occasions, setting incredible personal records and spearheading the way to multiple NJCAA National Championships.
"Vernon represents the type of story that this Achievement Award was made for. The growth and success he has achieved personally, athletically, and professionally since he arrived as a young freshman at South Plains College until today, is remarkable," said Blaine Wiley, former Head Track & Field Coach at South Plains.
Norwood's start at South Plains granted him the opportunity to grow as an athlete and open the door for more chances to continue his career. After his time at South Plains, Norwood transferred to Louisiana State University. While at LSU, he was a four-time national champion at the NCAA Level.
Upon the conclusion of his collegiate career, Norwood has taken part in multiple Olympic and World Championship Games. He has earned gold medals during the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games as well as in the 2015, 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2024 World Championships.
"Vernon is widely recognized as one of the most loved and respected members of Team USA, and he has emerged as a leader and a mentor on and off the track. We were lucky to have him at South Plains College and he leaves a legacy in the NJCAA for others to aspire to," Wiley said.
