2019 marks 45th consecutive title for Indian River men

Buffalo, NY - The Indian River (FL) men's swimming and diving team captured their 45th consecutive national title with 1,297 total team points.  Iowa Central, Southwestern Oregon, South Georgia State, and Barton rounded out the top-five in the four-day event. 

The Pioneer men won 24 of the 25 individual and team events throughout the championship.  Indian River was led by sophomores Ruben Van Leeuwen and Ryen Van Wyk, who claimed a total of three titles a piece.  Freshman standout Jarryd Baxter also claimed three individual titles during the championship, while contributing to one team relay title. 

  • Iowa Central's Emile Lutzeler claimed the lone title for the Tritons in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 25.43. 
  • Van Leewen, a standout from the 2018 championship, claimed titles in the 50-yard freestyle, 800-yard freestyle relay, and 100-yard butterfly.
  • Van Wyk, 2018 NJCAA Men's Swimmer of the Year, topped the 50-yard backstroke field and claimed a pair of relay titles in the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley. 
  • Freshman Matt Priola was dominant in the 3-meter dive for the Pioneers with a score of 500.10. 
  • The Indian River women also claimed the national title, posting 1,277 total team points. 
  • Indian River's Baxter, named Men's Swimmer of the Year, set an NJCAA record in the 200-yard backstroke.
  • Monroe's (NY) Cameron Wagner and Tyler Bischoping were named the Men's Swimming and Diving Non-Scholarship Athletes of the Year.
