SZATKOWSKI, ORTIZ POWER MIDDLESEX SOFTBALL PAST BERGEN CC

Madison Szatkowski and Simirrah Ortiz had huge days at the plate and Middlesex College took advantage of 36 walks as the Colts swept Bergen CC in a Region 19 softball matchup.

Middlesex moved to 7-3 on the season while Bergen fell to 0-7.

Game 1 of the doubleheader was close early with the Colts holding a 4-3 lead going into the third inning. Middlesex broke open the game there, plating 15 runs in the top of the third. Middlesex and Bergen each added solo runs in the fourth and fifth inning before the game was stopped due to the mercy rule with the score 21-5.

Ortiz went 3-3 with two home runs, four runs, seven RBIs in the game. Szatkowski went 2-4 with a run and four RBIs.

Rebecca Ortiz (Sophomore/South Plainfield, NJ) went 2-2 with two walks and four runs scored.

Madison Rackett (Freshman/Woodbridge, NJ) started and picked up the win for Middlesex. Summer Ramirez (Sophomore/South Brunswick, NJ) pitched the final three innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out six.

In Game 2, Szatkowski and Ortiz had the big bats once again, each of them going 3-4 with a home run. Ortiz added six more RBIs to her total and Szatkowski knocked in five.

Makenzie Marsh (Freshman/Middlesex, NJ), Kaylin Nepton (Sophomore/Middlesex, NJ), Rebecca Ortiz, Ramirez and Rackett each had two-hit games.

Sarah Ohnmeiss (Freshman/South Plainfield) went 1-1 with a triple, two runs, two RBIs and three walks.

Alice Melvin (Freshman/Milltown, NJ) pitched the first four innings and picked up the win for the Colts. Marissa Lugo (Sophomore/Iselin, NJ) came on to strike out the side in a perfect fifth inning to seal the win.

Middlesex is scheduled to return to action, weather permitting, on Wednesday when they are set to host Camden CC in a big Region 19 showdown. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30PM.
