Spartans Drop Contest to Panthers

Cayuga Community College Men's Basketball couldn't overcome a challenging first half Saturday in a home loss to Tompkins Cortland Community College.

The Spartans trailed by 19 at halftime but played the Panthers even in the second half before losing 73-58. With the loss Cayuga is 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in Region III competition.

Cayuga's defense kept the Spartans close early in the first half. They trailed by just four with less than 10 minutes remaining in the frame, but the Panthers pulled away to make it 36-17 at halftime.

The Spartans' offense picked up after the break, but Tompkins Cortland remained in control throughout the half.

Tony Borges and Alejandro Castellanos were the only Spartans in double figures for the contest, with Borges scoring 15 and Castellanos finishing with 12. Wol Machteng added eight points and Chris Kirkland finished with six.

Cayuga is on the road Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Erie Community College before returning home to host SUNY Broome on Saturday, Nov. 18.
