Men’s Basketball finishes 2-0 in Home Classic

Highland improved to 5-3 on the season after going 2-0 in their home Classic defeating Northwest Kansas Technical College 87-83 and Graceland University JV 77-61.

"It is going to be a good measuring stick for us," commented head Coach Jerre Cole prior to Friday night's matchup with Northwest Kansas Technical College, the newest member of the KJCCC.

The Mavericks came into the game 6-0 while Highland was sitting at 3-3.

Alonzo Williams started the night off with an alley-oop dunk for the games first points and followed it up with a big three-point shot giving Highland a 5-0 lead in the first few minutes. Highland would never give up the lead the rest of the game as they went on to defeat the Mavericks 87-83, serving them their first loss of the season.

Williams scored 12 first-half points to help Highland to a 41-31 going into the locker room.

Halfway through the second half, Highland built their lead to 23-points but the Mavericks still had some gas left in the tank. They chipped away at the Scottie lead with big threes from Simic and Lybaek cutting the Highland lead to three with :52 seconds left in the game.

Late fouls and made free-throws helped the Scotties finish out the game winning 87-83.

Alonzo Williams led the way for Highland with 21 points and six rebounds. Holden Redparth added in 18 points while Taiveyhon Mason finished with 13 points and five assists.

Highland jumped out to a 17-point lead halfway through the first half, but the Yellow Jackets climbed back into it making it a 4-point Highland lead at the break.

Graceland hung on most of the second half keeping it a tight game, down eight with 6:52 left in the game. A Ryan Haskins three-pointer started a 13-6 run in favor of Highland that would finish the game with the Scotties winning 77-61.

Holden Redparth led the way offensively with 22 pints and seven rebounds. Alonzo Williams and Taiveyhon Mason both chipped in 14 apiece and Mason finished with eight assists. Leland Harvey was the other Scottie in double figures finishing with 10 points and five rebounds.
