Barnesville, GA - The Gordon State Highlanders extended their lead in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association by defeating the Georgia Military Bulldogs 2-1. The first half proved to be a cagey affair with neither side able to find the break through.

The Highlanders created two scoring opportunities. Ashley Hendrix played a near post ball for Alex Chapman to run on to but she pushed her shot just past the post. The second shot brought a fine save from GMC goalkeeper Lindsey Mathis. Chapman was able to drive in behind the defensive line and pulled a ball back to Kayleigh McQueen who hit a first time shot that Mathis had to get down quickly to save.

The match remained tense as play resumed in the second half until sophomore Alex Chapman opened the scoring with her 5th goal of the season in the 67th minute. Chapman collected a ball deep in GMC territory and dribbled past two defenders before rifling a shot past the goalkeeper to the far post.

The Highlanders doubled their advantage in the 87th minute when sophomore Kayleigh McQueen slotted home a shot to the right corner of the goal. McQueen was assisted by freshman Gaby Arellano on the play. In the final minute of the match GMC scored a consolation goal that pushed the final score to 2-1.

With the win the Highlanders are now 7-1-1 overall with a conference best 5-0-1 in region 17. Gordon State travels this coming Saturday, Sept. 28 to Douglas, GA to take on the Hawks of South Georgia State at 5:00 PM.  The last time out against South Georgia State, the Highlanders jumped out to a three goal lead but had to hold on for a 3-2 win.
