Lady Senators swipe opening pair at Jackson State

JACKSON, Tenn. — Walters State picked up its first two Tennessee Community College Athletic Association softball wins of the season Sunday afternoon by sweeping a road doubleheader at Jackson State.

The Lady Senators allowed just one earned run in 14 innings on the day, as they scored all seven runs in the opening game in the first three innings en route to a 7-4 victory before Delilah Malczewski tossed a five-hit, complete game shutout in the nightcap as WSCC won 3-0.

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 8-10 on the season and 2-2 in league action. The losses dropped the homestanding Green Jays to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in TCCAA play.

In the opener, Raylon Smith (4-4) pitched into the fourth inning and allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits before being relieved by Lauren Brickey, who notched her second save by tossing four shutout innings while scattering three hits.

Erin Foster led the Walters State offensive attack, smacking three hits with a double and knocking in a pair of runs, while Jenica Brown added a pair of hits and drove in two runs as well. Brickey, Keeley Quillen and Mia Edwardson each added two hits, while Sydney Dukes, Sydney Fox, Emily Whitaker and Lexi McDowell all singled in the win. Dukes drove in a run in the victory.

WSCC pushed three runs across in the opening frame before the home team responded with two of their own in the home half, but the Lady Senators added a run in the second and three more in the third for a 7-2 lead.

Jackson State scored a single run in the bottom of the third and another in the home half of the fourth before being shutout over the final three innings.

In the second game of the day, the Lady Senators put a run on the board in the first, fourth and fifth innings to give Malczewski all the support she needed in a 3-0 victory.

Malczewski (3-4) went the distance and allowed just five hits while striking out three, and she only allowed two base runners to reach second base in the contest, with one of those reaching third in the first inning of the game.

Quillen led WSCC with three hits, including a double, while driving in a run in the win. Dukes added two hits with an RBI, while Brown had two hits, Foster doubled and Taylor McConnell singled in the contest.

The two teams will close the four-game set with another doubleheader Monday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m
